The primary concern is corrosion of the metal components embedded within or attached to the concrete bin, such as hinges, lids, liners, or bolts. Salt spray is highly corrosive and can rapidly degrade these metal parts, leading to operational failure and unsightly rust stains on the concrete surface. While the concrete itself is largely inert and resistant to salt, the compromised metal fixtures become a significant weakness. For harsh marine environments, alternative materials like stainless steel (grade 316), marine-grade polymer, or fully galvanized steel bins often provide superior long-term performance and lower maintenance. If using concrete bins near the coast, specify stainless steel fittings, apply protective sealants to the concrete, and implement a rigorous inspection and maintenance schedule to combat corrosion.
